General Dentistry Procedure: Things You Should Know

General dentists are the backbone of our dental health. They help provide a wide range for overall treatment and management, from visual inspections to X-rays to minor procedures like cavity removal or crowns if needed. Your general dentist offers some or all of the following treatments.

1. Dental Cleaning

A professional dental clean, also known as a scale and polish, is designed to remove plaque that can’t be removed with regular brushing at home. Dental cleaning helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease in the future.

2. Fillings

A filling can be used to cover tooth decay or repair injured teeth. The dentist will numb your tooth to make it easier for them to clean out any decayed tissue. They then use a dental drill before placing in-depth filling work that eliminates pain and discomfort from patients.

Fillings for teeth can be a variety of materials, including gold amalgam or mercury. The dentist might also use porcelain and composite resin to fill your missing enamel if you want less pain in the future.

3. Root Canal

A root canal treatment removes the decayed centre of a tooth, known as the pulp. It’s also called endodontic treatment and involves removing some surrounding bone so that decay can’t worsen. The teeth are filled with antimicrobial treatment, then topped off by a crown.

4. Crowns

Dental crowns are great for restoring damaged teeth. They can be used to save the tooth from extraction, and they’re also helpful in correcting cosmetic imperfections like crooked or chipped enamel. Crowns are essential for protecting your teeth from further infection or damage.

5. Bridges

Bridges are a dental structure that contains an artificial tooth or ‘pontic’ anchored to two crowns to replace one of your missing teeth. A dental bridge works best if you have healthy teeth on either side of the gap left by your missing tooth.

6. Tooth Extraction

When a decayed tooth has no other treatment option, the dentist will pull it out. The dentist will also remove a tooth causing discomfort and pain, such as wisdom teeth. A local anaesthetic is first applied to numb the area before they start. Once it’s numb, they can loosen any tooth in gum with ease using forceps and other special tools.

7. Dentures

Dentures work to replace lost or damaged teeth. A complete denture replaces all of your original tooth structure, while partial dentures only cover some parts and allow chewing flexibility.

Dentures are a particular type of prosthetic that fits your mouth perfectly. They often take several visits to the dentist before it’s finished so they can make sure all measurements match up.
